The Whippet Breed Council (WBC) was set up in 1984 to act as a conduit for the Breed Clubs to work together, liaise with each other and collaborate with The Kennel Club for the benefit of the breed. It provides a focal point for the breed and is a consultative body having no executive powers over the affairs of the constituent clubs.
I was recommended as a designer to the WBC by the secretary of The Whippet Club, whose website I designed and maintain. The site is built with both WordPress and GeneratePress as a framework.
There is quite a lot of breed information, and news items dating back to 2018 that were originally inserted into a single page per year. These were all converted to posts and organised by year using categories.
The WBC news also includes many items on the health of the whippet breed, which have been added to the ‘Health’ page as a query loop. These posts also show in the general news (by date) section, in this case the page loads static content followed by a query loop of the posts tagged with “Health”. It enables the visitor to quickly find information about heart testing and general health related articles.
A large part of the WBC is supporting whippet breed clubs with regards to showing and judging. The Education & Judging page has sub pages and also links to relevant Kennel Club resources accessible online. Elsewhere on the site there are other resources, including embedded Google Slide Presentations, videos and WBC meeting records.
The Breed Standard page has a particularly interesting slide presentation, which is very informative and uses photography alongside text to illustrate the finer points of the Breed Standard.
CSS animations (mostly fade-in) are used in the site, but are light and do not slow page load.
The responsive mobile settings include an off-canvas navigation menu, activated from the hambuger menu ( ) in the top right of the screen. The off canvas nav menu will also come into play on thinner tablet resolutions.
